Several of the advantages of plants are that they not only produce oxygen and some are a great food source, but they also help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the air. At the end of 2020 the carbon dioxide levels have reached 414.66 ppm (that is a rate of approximately 2 ppm per year and increasing), the highest it has been in over 800,000 years. This increase is due to humanity's industrialization, burning of fossil fuels, and deforestation efforts over the years.
The Earth naturally processes the carbon dioxide with plants and the ocean. Plants use it to perform photosynthesis and produce oxygen while the ocean dissolves the CO2 into the water, producing carbonic acid. The amount of carbon dioxide the ocean dissolves amounts to around 30% to 40% of what humans produce. This generates such a high amount of of carbonic acid that it is actually altering the oceans' pH balance, making it more acidic. This is important and dangerous due to the lower the pH, the more the sea life are dying off. Fish, animals, coral reefs, and more are losing their ecosystems or worse becoming extinct because of this.
We here at LOR Farms are researching methods of reforestation and carbon sequestering using various plants and both macro- and micro-algae. We are working with microalgae that can process pollution directly from the source at the industrial plants by way of bioreactors. We are also looking into the use of macroalgae, kelp, and seaweeds to act as carbon sinks in the ocean that when carbon absorption has been depleted, the kelp can safely be bundled and weighted to sink to the bottom of the ocean. Here the ocean's pressure will keep the carbon at the seafloor and break it down into a biomass of sludge ready to be reprocessed into the Earth's core over time.
For what we are doing in the reforestation efforts, please see the page on reforestation in the Our Research tab.
